McKenna’s Monthly Market Report

MARCH 2021

The baby carrots coming in right now are so beautiful and tender! The colors are vibrant and the tops are green and sturdy. Baby carrots are wonderful because you can whole roast them or eat them raw in their natural form. They add so much sweetness and colorful vibrance to any dish!

JANUARY 2021

Winter greens! They are great stewed or raw. They also last weeks in the fridge so you never have to worry about them going bad. At Pasjoli, they are wilted with some of my other favorite winter greens (wasabina, spigarello, russian kale, and curly mustard).

DECEMBER 2020

I love brussels sprouts in all colors (purple and green). Now that the weather has cooled down, the brussels coming in have such an amazing flavor and hold up really well to aggressive cooking. There is also something called a “kalette” which is a cross between kale and brussels sprouts. These kalettes are really great fried!

NOVEMBER 2020

Everyone patiently waits for persimmons to come in, and they are here! Pictured are fuyu persimmons which are the crunchy variety. I really enjoy the hachiya which are a custardy variety. Other varieties are coffee cake, chocolate, and cinnamon, all have an amazing brown sugar flavor. They are great raw, cooked, or dehydrated.

OCTOBER 2020

All of the cauliflower! I am loving the purple, green, and orange cauliflower right now. Not only do they have great flavor but the color stays just as vibrant after cooking!

SEPTEMBER 2020

Now that the weather is cooling down a bit, succulents are coming in. My favorite is purslane. This herb is more like a juicy, briny, lettuce. It is great raw and tossed in salads!

AUGUST 2020

Although many view summer squash as being a basic, flavorless vegetable, let us be the first to tell you it’s not! The summer squash from the farmer’s market has the most amazing sweet flavor when roasted as well as when it is raw and shaved thin! There are so many different varieties of summer squash and each of them are unique in their own way. Some of my favorites are the patty pan. They are so sweet when roasted and they come in so many different fun shapes and colors!

JULY 2020

Stone fruit is in full swing! There are many varieties of yellow peaches, white peaches, yellow nectarines, white nectarines, plums, and pluots! Each farm has a new variety every 1-2 weeks to ensure they have one of everything to sell each market. These dapple fire pluots have a gorgeous, bright red flesh, tart skin, and super sweet and amazing flavor! Stone fruit season in California is some of the best in the country! We work with an amazing organic farm up in Dinuba, CA that has some of the most unique, beautiful, and delicious varieties!

JUNE 2020

The whole market smells like fresh basil! Basils thrive in the heat and summer basil is the best there is. It is extremely fragrant and holds up really well. Coleman Family Farms has some of my favorite basil. They grow Italian Genovese (pictured here), Thai basil, purple ruffle basil, and lemon basil! Some of my other favorite summer herbs are lemon verbena and anise hyssop. All of these herbs are so strong and they really pack a punch, in a good way! Nowadays, basil seems like a year-round herb but take advantage of the amazing quality in the summertime!

MAY 2020

Cherry season this year has been amazing! Last year we had a rough cherry season because they didn’t get the warm weather they needed. The cherries this year definitely made up for it! These brooks cherries are incredibly sweet, tart, and juicy! They hold up really well making them great for baking and cooking but they awesome in raw preparations as well!

APRIL 2020

These purple snow peas are incredible! They are so crunchy, tender, and sweet. Their beautiful purple color depends when cooked!
These are great sliced into a salad or charred whole with some good olive oil and garlic.

MARCH 2020

I am loving all of the pea tendrils right now! They are so tender and sweet and have all of the amazing flavor of peas. They have a beautiful vibrant green color. I love them for garnishes on pizzas and toasts, wilted, or mixed into a salad.

FEBRUARY 2020

Red dragon Napa cabbage is one of the most beautiful vegetables i’ve ever seen! It has all the same great qualities are your standard Napa cabbage but it has a bright purple hue and great sweetness! This cabbage is great raw in a slaw or charred!

JANUARY 2020

Spigarello is such an awesome green! Part of the cruciferous family, the flavor is mild, grassy and sweet. It is everything you want in broccoli without the bitterness or sulphuric qualities. It is great wilted with other winter greens like kale and mustard

DECEMBER 2019

Most tomatoes are a summer crop, except for these mountain magic tomatoes. Being a late harvest tomato, it has a very thick skin that holds up really well to slow roasting. At Dialogue, we would roast them for up to six hours intensifying the flavor while still holding onto all the moisture.

NOVEMBER 2019

Pears are here! Pears are such a delicate fruit so when the season is right, take advantage! I love monterrey asian pears (pictured), bosc, bartlett, and my favorite are the kieffer pear (a cross between an asian and bartlett pear).

OCTOBER 2019

Grapes are at their prime right now. Some of the best grapes such as thomcord and muscat have seeds making them great for juices. My favorite seedless grapes right now are the sweet scarlett and red flame variety!

SEPTEMBER 2019

Figs are here! Pictured are Laura’s honey figs which have a beautiful white flesh and super sweet flavor. There are also candy stripe figs, brown turkey figs, black mission figs, and Laura’s famous violette de bordeaux figs. Whichever you choose, they are all delicious in their own unique way. Fig season only lasts a couple of months so get them while you can!

AUGUST 2019

Tomatoes are in full swing! Although we have had a cooler summer here in Southern California, it has finally warmed up for these beauties to ripen!

My favorite variety of cherry tomatoes are without a doubt the sungold variety. They have a bright orange color, good firm texture, and are super sweet!

My favorite varieties of large heirloom tomatoes are black brandy tomato (red), pineapple tomato (yellow), and persimmon tomato (orange). They have an amazing juicy but not mealy texture and their tomato flavor is unmatched!

JULY 2019

Pluots and plums are here! My favorite variety pictured to the right are the Bella Royale pluots. Their skins have a beautiful pink color and the flesh is so sweet, refreshing, and floral… everything you want in stone fruit in the summertime. Other varieties of plums and pluots right now that are great:

Santa Rosa plum- this is your classic red skin white flesh plum that has a tart skin and sweet flesh… also has a great firm texture

Elephant Heart plum- tart purple skin with a blood red juicy flesh. On top of being the perfect balance of sweet and tart, this plum has the most amazing plum flavor!

Mirabelles plum- this plum has a bright yellow skin and yellow flesh. The sweetness level of this plum is off the charts sweet but the skin give it a nice acid punch. These plums are also half the size of a regular plum, but they pack a punch!
